The society census record collection has the entire 1790 federal census.  No schedules are known to exist for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia. They are popularly believed to have been destroyed during the British attack on Washington during the War of 1812 but no hard evidence exists.  In fact, by law, the schedules should have been stored in each local federal district court until they were directed to be sent to the U.S. Secretary of State in 1830. The 1790 schedules for Virginia were reconstructed from state enumerations.  These are the printed schedules as published by the Bureau of the Census in 1907- 8. At the end of roll 3, the 1840 Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services has also been reproduced.

Our collection of 1850 federal census records is limited to parts of the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.  The 1850 census is the first where every member of the household has names and birthplaces recorded.  The 1850 census assigns each dwelling a number and each family a number within the town or township in the specified county.  This little detail alone will sometimes help put family groups together.  The 1850 census also includes the name, age, sex, and color of each member of the household. Other information includes occupation, value of real estate, birthplace, whether married or attended school within the year, check marks for cannot read or write, and whether a pauper or convict.

Ninth Census of the United States
Total Population
38,155,505

Our collection of 1870 federal census records is limited to parts of the states of Illinois and Kentucky.  Besides the information asked in the 1860 census, the 1870 schedule asked if a person's father or mother were foreign born and if a male was a "citizen of the U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards." It also asked each male citizen 21 years or older if he had had his "right to vote denied or abridged on other grounds than rebellion or other crime." In other words, was the person denied the right to vote
in violation of the 14th amendment, which guarantees citizenship, due process, and equal protection under the law for men regardless of race.  The 1870 census also recorded the date of birth or marriage if it had occurred during the census year.

The society collection currently contains 1880 federal census records for parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin.  The 1880 schedule was the first to ask about the relationship of each individual to the head of the family, specifying what could only be guessed at in earlier censuses. Moreover, the 1880 census was the first to inquire about the birthplace of each person's parents, including the country of those who were foreign born.  The census gives the state or country of birth, not the city or county.

A 1921 fire in the Commerce Department Building destroyed many 1890 population and special schedules, and water used to extinguish the blaze damaged many more. As a result, the Government disposed of most schedules - although rumors continue to circulate about bits and pieces existing in various archives. The few remaining 1890 population schedules or fragments are contained on three rolls of microfilm (Publication M407) and are indexed on two others. The only Illinois records known to have survived are for Mound Township of McDonough County.  If you have an ancestor who may have served in the Civil War, you may want to try consulting the 1890 Special Schedules Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War,  Publication M123.  The society does not have any of these schedules.

The society collection currently contains 1900 Soundex cards for partial surnames in Illinois and Kentucky as well as the federal census schedules for parts of Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri.  The National Archives and Records Administration has a Soundex Machine website which can be used to obtain the Soundex code for any given surname.

The 1900 census Soundex cards contain name, race, month and year of birth, age, citizenship status, place of residence by state and county, civil division, and, where appropriate for urban dwellers, the city name, house number, and street name. The cards also list the volume number, enumeration district number, and page and line numbers of the original schedules from which the information was taken.  Soundex card records should be considered a secondary source since they were created many years after the census was taken.  Because of the possibility of transcription errors in the Soundex cards, the original census schedule should also be consulted.

The 1900 census schedules gives for each person: name; address; relationship to the head of the household; color or race; sex; month and year of birth; age at last birthday; marital status; if a wife is listed within the household, then the number of years married, number of children born of that marriage, and the number of children living; places of birth of each individual and of the parents of each individual; citizenship; if the individual is foreign born, then the year of immigration and the number of years in the United States; the citizenship status of foreign born individuals over age 21; occupation; whether or not the person can read, write, and speak English; whether home is owned or rented; whether or not home is a farm; and whether or not home is mortgaged.

The society collection currently contains 1910 Soundex cards for partial surnames in Michigan as well as the federal census schedules for Tazewell and Washington Counties in Illinois.  The National Archives and Records Administration has a Soundex Machine website which can be used to obtain the Soundex code for any given surname.

The information on both 1910 Soundex and Miracode cards includes the surname, first name, state and county of residence, city (if appropriate), age, and place of birth.  A Miracode card lists the family number or sometimes the visitation number assigned by the enumerator.  The Soundex card lists the sheet or page number on the appropriate census schedule.  Note the Miracode and Soundex are both calculated the same - the Soundex card is handwritten while the Miracode card is printed.

The 1910 census schedules record the following information for each person: name; relationship to head of household; sex; color or race; age at last birthday; marital status; length of present marriage; if a mother, number of children and number of living children; place of birth; place of birth of parents; if foreign born, year of immigration and citizenship status; language spoken; occupation; type of industry employed in; if employer, employee, or self-employed; if unemployed; number of weeks unemployed in 1909; if home is rented or owned; if home is owned, free or mortgaged; if home is a house or a farm; if a
survivor of the Union or Confederate Army or Navy; if blind in both eyes; and if deaf or dumb.

The society collection currently contains only the 1920 federal census schedules for Tazewell and Wabash Counties in Illinois.  We do not currently have any of the 1920 Soundex index.

The information on the 1920 Soundex card includes the surname, first name, state and county of residence, city (if appropriate), age, place of birth, and whether a U.S. citizen.  Each card also lists the volume, enumeration district, sheet number, and line number where the person can be found on the
population schedule.  Soundex card records should be considered a secondary source since they were created many years after the census was taken.  Because of the possibility of transcription errors in the Soundex cards, the original census schedule should also be consulted.

The 1920 census format and information closely resembles that of the 1910 census. The 1920 census, however, did not ask about unemployment on the day of the census, nor did it ask about service in the Union or Confederate army or navy. Questions about how long a couple had been married were also omitted.  The 1920 census includes four new questions: one asking the year of naturalization and three about the mother tongue of the individual and his parents.
