at the University of Illinois at Springfield

Federation of Genealogical Societies
- Has lectured at annual
conferences for the National Genealogical Society, Federation of
Genealogical Societies, and GenTech.
- Leads an annual research trip
to the Allen County Public Library co-sponsored by the St. Charles
Community College and the St. Charles County (Missouri) Genealogical
Society
- Teaches a week-long series of
genealogical workshops each spring at Carl Sandburg College in
Galesburg, Illinois
- Teaches mathematics at Carl
Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois
- Michael has researched his own
family for over twenty years and has also actively researched his
children's ancestry as well. By ancestry, Michael is one-half
Ostfriesen (many early Tazewell County settlers were also Ostfriesen).
The bulk of his family's ancestry is centered in the American Midwest
and points east. Many of his children's ancestors were post-1850
European immigrants from a variety of countries, including: Belgium,
Germany, Ireland, Sweden, and Switzerland. There are also lines
from Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, and Maryland.
- Michael has spent numerous
hours in local courthouses, archives and libraries working on these
families.

- Land Records
(Public Land States)
This lecture provides an
overview of land records in public land states, concentrating on
terminology, township/section layout, and indexes. Aimed at those who
have no or little experience with these records.
- Locating
Emigrant Origins
This lecture discusses a
series of general ways to determine where your emigrant ancestor
originated.
Research suggestions for locating and using
newspapers in your own genealogical research.
- Organization
of Information
How you organize your
information plays a major role in what facts
you notice. This lecture discusses effective and easy ways to organize
your information in order to make the most of the data you do have.
