Locomotives in Damaged Roundhouse

On March 30, 1938, a family of three to five tornadoes moved across central and west central Illinois during the afternoon. The worst damage from the outbreak occurred in South Pekin, where three city blocks were leveled, including extensive damage to the Chicago & Northwestern railyards.  The above photo shows locomotives still standing in the remains of the roundhouse.  However, railcars out in the open did not fair as well -- as you can see in the scene below.

Overturned Rail Cars

Sometimes, unexplained events occur during tornadoes.   Here's a photo showing the tornado totally destroyed the railyard's icehouse -- without moving the ice blocks stacked inside at all!
