If so,
please contact the
society! (Note: Photo was identified in November 2003 -
see the details).
This photo is from part of our glass
negative collection that we've come to call the “endangered soldiers”.
This shows what age is slowly doing to these negatives (although most are
in better shape than this one). We're in the process of scanning all
the images and are trying to identify as many as possible. We will
be posting the names of the ones we have identified in the near future and
copies will be available to researchers.
The medal on this
soldier's uniform is the Distinguished Service Cross. A more
detailed image is displayed at the left of the photo.
According to the
Total
Army Personnel Command, “The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to
a person who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, distinguishes
himself or herself by extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of a
Medal of Honor; while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Unites
States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an
opposing/foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces
engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the
United States is not a belligerent party. The act or acts of heroism must
have been so notable and have involved risk of life so extraordinary as to
set the individual apart from his or her comrades.”
TCGHS feels it's
important to continue to preserve and honor what all soldiers have done
for us.
