The Tremont Courthouse was one of
our early "Photo of the Month" features back in August 1999. As
mentioned in that article, this courthouse served Tazewell County from
1839 until 1849 when the citizens voted to move the county seat from
Tremont to Pekin.
Unfortunately, this building which
had witnessed arguments by Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, General
Shields, J. R. Logan, and David Davis would be left to decay.
Comparing to our original photo, you can see
the cupola is now missing, the roof has caved in, and all the windows are
missing the glass. The courthouse would eventually be torn down.
Ellen Rowan Taylor of Ft. Wayne,
Indiana recently found this picture in a box containing several other
photos over 100 years old. She thinks the
man on the bicycle in the
photo may be her
Great Grandfather H. George Woost
but does not know for sure.
If you know anything more about the
photo or the folks in it, please contact
the society.
